Business is in full swing at Cotten Music Center! This historic Nashville guitar shop is right at home inside their new location at Houston Station. Cotten Music is just one of the many tenants who will soon be a part of our Event, Art and Music Community here at Houston Station and we are pleased to welcome them to our building. Cotten Music was founded in 1961 by Richard Cotten, who until his death in 1995 was regarded as one of the city's finest jazz musicians. The shop was run in its' Hillsboro Village location by co-owners Darcy Cotten and Kim Sherman (who was a previous customer) until Darcy's 2012 retirement. Cotten moved into Houston Station last summer and have been in full operation here for two months. Kim Sherman, along with Rick and Kit Crump, are the shop's current owners. The crew at Cotten continue to specialize in small-shop new guitars, as well as vintage and pre-owned instruments. Guitar collectors and enthusiasts travel from all over for the unique collection of stringed instruments carried at Cotten, including guitars, mandolins, banjos, basses, ukuleles and the occasional electric guitar and amplifier.
Step inside Cotten's shop on any weekday afternoon and you are likely to hear master luthier, Andrew "The Mudge" Smith (pictured below), tuning up an old instrument, getting it to its' best state and ready for re-sale. Andrew is Cotten's vintage guitar guy, specializing in stringed instrument building and repair. He also plays guitar and mandolin and according to shop owner, Rick Crump, is a "good-natured expert luthier who calls 'em like he sees 'em." Cotten Music's new shop is an intimate, acoustically rich space, perfect for coming in, picking up an instrument and relaxing inside this comfortable environment.
Cotten Music Center is in the process of starting a series of workshops where attendees can learn anything from basic guitar maintenance to learning to play a new type of stringed instrument. Cotten has also begun hosting jam sessions featuring various types of artists ranging from country to bluegrass to Americana. They are hosting a concert featuring Americana singer-songwriters, Wil Maring and Robert Bowlin on March 27th, from 7-9 p.m. If you don't know their music, you should definitely not miss them when they're here!
